sta·tion (staґshən) [L. statio, from stare to stand still] 1. a position or location. 2. the location of the presenting part of the fetus in the birth canal in relation to an imaginary plane passing through the ischial spines, which is designated as zero. In one system, the location is given in whole centimeters, ranging from −5 (above the plane) to +5 (below the plane). In an older alternative system, the long axis of the birth canal is divided into thirds above and below the plane and the location is given by thirds, from −3 (above the plane) to +3 (below the plane). 3. a specified site to which the sick and wounded are brought.
