syn·chro·tron (singґkro-tron) a machine for accelerating charged particles (electrons, protons) in circular orbits, by simultaneously manipulating the strength of the magnetic field and the frequency of the accelerating voltage. It combines features of the cyclotron and betatron and will produce 70 million volts.
