The relationship between two genetic loci (not genes) represented on the same chromosomal pair or (for haploid chromosomes) on the same chromosome; an anatomic rather than a segregational relationship. [syn- + G. tainia, ribbon]

syn·te·ny (sinґtə-ne) [syn- + Gr. tainia ribbon] 1. the presence together on the same chromosome of two or more gene loci whether or not in such proximity that they may be subject to linkage (q.v.). 2. conservation of gene order between the chromosome of different species.
