an antibiotic used to treat septicaemia, external eye infections, and lower respiratory, urinary, skin, abdominal, and central nervous system infections. It is administered by intravenous or intramuscular injection or by inhalation. Kidney damage or hearing impairment may occur with high doses or prolonged use. Trade names: Nebcin, Tobi.

to·bra·my·cin (to″brə-miґsin) [USP] an aminoglycoside antibiotic, part of the nebramycin complex, effective against a wide range of aerobic gram-negative bacilli and some gram-positive bacteria, having a range of antibacterial activity similar to that of gentamicin; used topically in the treatment of external infections of the eye and its adnexa. It is also inhaled orally in the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in patients with cystic fibrosis.
