A protein that mediates the transport of one molecule or ion through a membrane without known coupling to the transport of any other molecule or ion.

uni·port·er (uґnĭ-port-ər) a cell membrane transport protein that facilitates the passage of small hydrophilic ions and molecules through a cell membrane down a concentration gradient. See also facilitated diffusion, under diffusion.
