Aris·to·lo·chia (.)a-.ris-tə-'lō-kē-ə n a large genus (the type of the family Aristolochiaceae) of mostly tropical herbs or woody vines with pungent aromatic rootstocks and very irregular flowers that includes several that have been used medicinally (as Texas snakeroot and Virginia snakeroot)

Aris·to·lo·chia (ə-ris″to-loґke-ə) [L., from Gr. aristos best + lochia] a large genus of shrubs and herbs of the family Aristolochiaceae; many species contain aristolochic acid. High doses may be toxic, causing kidney damage or diarrhea.
