a thermogenic type of adipose tissue containing a dark pigment. It arises during embryonic life in certain specific areas in many mammals, and is prominent in newborn babies. It remains distinct and conspicuous in adults in only certain species, especially those that hibernate. Cf. white adipose t. Called also brown fat.
