a sedative and hypnotic drug administered by mouth as a syrup, mainly in children and the elderly, to induce sleep; its derivative chloral betaine is formulated as tablets. Nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal side-effects limit the use of these drugs. Prolonged use may lead to dependence. Trade name: Welldorm.
