a dental auxiliary specially trained in dental prophylaxis, who meets certain prescribed standards of education and clinical competence. Dental hygienists work under the direct supervision of the dentist; their functions include scaling and polishing the teeth, dental radiography, and teaching oral hygiene. Some states permit them to apply fluoride solution to the teeth.
