a bisphosphonates drug that is administered orally to treat Paget's disease and (in combination with calcium carbonate) to treat and prevent osteoporosis of the vertebrae, including postmenopausal osteoporosis. Side-effects include diarrhoea and nausea. Trade names: Didronel, Didronel PMO.

eti·dro·nate (EHDP) (e-tĭ-droґnāt) a diphosphonate compound that inhibits the resorption and deposition of hydroxyapatite crystals in bone and is used for treatment of various mineralization disorders of bone. Because of its affinity for sites of osteoid mineralization, it is also used as a complex with technetium 99m in bone scanning; see table at technetium.
