gamma camera

gamma camera
gamma camera n a camera that detects the gamma-ray photons produced by radionuclide decay and is used esp. in medical diagnostic scanning to create a visible record of a radioactive substance injected into the body

a piece of apparatus that detects radioactivity in the form of gamma rays emitted by radioactive isotopes that have been introduced into the body as tracer. It contains an activated sodium iodide crystal (see scintillator) and a large array of photomultiplier tubes. Using lead collimator, the position of the source of the radioactivity can be plotted and displayed on a TV monitor or photographic film (see scintigram).
