a severe form of dengue, characterized by hemorrhagic manifestations such as thrombocytopenia and hemoconcentration. The World Health Organization distinguishes four types according to severity: grade I, fever, constitutional symptoms, and positive tourniquet test; grade II, grade I plus spontaneous bleeding into skin, gums, gastrointestinal tract, and other sites; grade III, grade II plus circulatory failure and agitation; and grade IV, profound shock with undetectable blood pressure and pulse. Grades III and IV are also known as dengue shock syndrome. Called also dengue hemorrhagic fever.
