Vater, papilla of
A small muscle located at the junction where of the common bile duct (from the liver and pancreas) empties into the duodenum (the upper part of the small intestine). Bile from the liver and secretions from the pancreas come through the papilla of Vater to mix with food in the duodenum for digestion. The papilla of Vater is also called the ampulla of Vater. Ampulla refers to a dilated (widened) segment in a tubular structure, in this case in the common bile duct. Abraham Vater (1684-1751) was a German anatomist.
