sudden, severe anorectal pain, lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes and then disappearing completely; the patient is symptom-free between episodes, which are generally infrequent. It occurs chiefly in young men, and the etiology is uncertain. The term is often used interchangeably with levator ani syndrome (q.v.).
