sat·el·li·tism (satґə-li-tiz-əm) 1. the presence or formation of satellites. 2. the phenomenon in which certain bacterial species grow more vigorously in the immediate vicinity of colonies of other unrelated species (e.g., Haemophilus influenzae near a colony of staphylococci), owing to the production of an essential metabolite by the latter species.
