sweating sickness n an epidemic febrile disease esp. of young cows that occurs chiefly in Africa, is characterized by profuse sweating and early high mortality, and is caused by a toxin produced and transmitted by a tick of the genus Hyalomma (H. truncatum)

a febrile, tickborne illness affecting African cattle, especially calves, due to a toxin produced by Hyalomma truncatum, and characterized by the presence of moist eczematous lesions of the mucous membranes. Called also tick toxicosis.
