thymidine kinase

thymidine kinase
thymidine kinase n an enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of thymidine in a pathway leading to DNA synthesis, that is active esp. in tissues undergoing growth or regeneration, and that is the key enzyme mediating replication in certain viruses (as the herpesvirus causing herpes simplex)

thy·mi·dine ki·nase (TK) (thiґmĭ-dēn kiґnās) [EC 2.7.1.21] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of thymine deoxyribonucleoside, a reaction of pyrimidine salvage. Because the reaction produces an easily selectable phenotype, the gene and promoter are used extensively in genetic research.
