transient global amnesia n temporary amnesia of short duration (as several hours) that is marked by sudden onset, by loss of past memories, and by an inability to form new memories, and that is believed to result from a transient ischemic attack affecting the posteromedial thalamus or hippocampus on both sides of the brain

an episode of short-term memory loss, usually nonrecurrent, and lasting a few hours, without other signs or symptoms of neurological impairment; the cause is usually unknown but is occasionally an ischemic or epileptic attack.
