Lancefield classification
a classification of the Streptococcus bacteria based on the presence or absence of antigenic carbohydrate on the cell surface. Species are classified into the groups A-S. Most species causing disease in humans belong to groups A, B, and D.

a serologic classification of the hemolytic streptococci, based on extraction and examination by a precipitin technique of group-specific carbohydrate antigens called C carbohydrates in the cell wall. Groups A to O have been established, with groups A to G being the most common ones infecting humans.
