antiphospholipid antibody syndrome

antiphospholipid antibody syndrome
an autoimmune disease in which the presence of antibody against phospholipid is associated with a tendency to thrombosis and - in women of childbearing age - recurrent (three or more) miscarriages. In pregnant women blood clots form in the placenta, resulting in the fetus being deprived of nourishment. Treatment is by low-dose aspirin or heparin.
