An iron-containing enzyme catalyzing the dehydration of citric acid to cis-aconitic acid, a reaction of significance in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. SYN: aconitase.

acon·i·tate hy·dra·tase (ə-konґĭ-tāt hiґdrə-tās) [EC 4.2.1.3] an enzyme of the lyase class that catalyzes the interconversion of citrate and isocitrate, a reaction of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (q.v.). The enzyme, a nonheme iron protein, is named for the cis-aconitate formed as an intermediate in the dehydration and rehydration reaction. Called also aconitase.
