cohort study

cohort study
a systematic study of a group of people, which may be conducted prospectively or retrospectively. A prospective cohort study involves a systematic follow-up for a defined period of time or until the occurrence of a specified event (e.g. onset of illness, retirement, or death) in order to observe their pattern of disease and/or cause of death. For a retrospective cohort study, data on the group's exposure and disease experience are already known.
