fetal blood sampling

fetal blood sampling
a technique, usually carried out during labour, in which a sample of blood is withdrawn from a vein in the scalp of the fetus. From this is determined the degree of fetal acidosis. The normal pH of fetal blood is 7.35 (range 7.45-7.25). The lower the level, the more likely is the fetus to be suffering from hypoxia, indicating an urgent need to terminate the labour; if the pH is allowed to fall below a level of 7.10, the life of the fetus is endangered.
