acamprosate calcium: acam·pro·sate cal·ci·um (ə-kamґpro-sāt) a synthetic compound used for the maintenance of abstinence from alcohol in the treatment of alcoholism, administered orally. Although its mechanism of action is uncertain, it is believed to interact with biochemical systems altered in alcoholism to restore the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.
