Birth rate

Birth rate
The birth rate is usually given as the number of live births divided by the average population (or the population at midyear). This is termed the crude birth rate. In 1995, for example, the crude birth rate per 1,000 population was 14 in the United States, 16.9 in Australia, etc.

the number of live births occurring in a year per 1000 total population (the annual crude birth rate). See fertility rate.

* * *

a rate in which the numerator is the number of live births in a geographic area in a defined period, usually one year. The denominator of the crude birth rate is the average total population or the midyear population in the area during the period. Specific birth rates for subsets of the population may also be calculated, e.g., an age-specific birth rate, limited to the population of females of a defined age range.
