par·am·phis·to·mi·a·sis (par″am-fis-to-miґə-sis) infestation by intestinal flukes of the family Paramphistomatidae. Most genera are usually found in ruminants; genera Gastrodiscoides in Asia and Watsonius in Africa may also be found in humans. Adult worms may be present without clinical signs, but immature worms cause more severe manifestations such as enteritis, severe diarrhea, anorexia, and hemorrhaging; heavy infestations can kill cattle and sheep. Called also amphistomiasis.
